Volunteer Hub

Simon started volunteering as a Campaigns Ambassador in December 2023. He’d already been heavily involved in fundraising for Cancer Research UK for well over 20 years, chairing a fundraising group “Louth Run for Life”, who have raised in excess of £750,000 for the charity. 

“After losing my brother to leukaemia 10 years ago & 2 months later my wife being diagnosed with breast cancer, I have always been passionate about the cause, and I really wanted to do more than just fundraise. My voluntary Campaigns Ambassador role has helped take my involvement one step further by playing a part in shaping the future of how our government can make developments in cancer research, diagnosis & care going forwards.” 

Having had an initial conversation with the Campaigns Ambassadors Team at Cancer Research UK, Simon’s fundraising group was invited to the Houses of Parliament by their local MP.  

“…It was a great time for me to introduce myself as a Campaigns Ambassador. I spoke briefly with her about the Tobacco & Vapes Bill with which Cancer Research UK had been heavily involved. She was very supportive of the aims of the bill, and said she was hopeful it would be passed. 

“I was lucky enough to attend the 2-day Campaigner Conference in Stratford, where I met up with other Campaigns Ambassadors from across the UK. This was extremely interesting, finding out about using social media for the current campaign regarding the election being a ‘Turning Point for Cancer’.  At the conference I met other friendly campaigners who have been extremely supportive and made me feel part of the team. It really made me feel as I was helping to make a difference in the fight against cancer.”

Hugh first volunteered at Glasgow Race for Life in 2011, following a call out for volunteers during the event. He was attending the event to support his wife, who had been diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009. When he heard an announcement over the speaker system requesting volunteer support, Hugh was inspired to get involved and says: “I felt that I could finally do something to contribute.” 

Hugh now volunteers at our Race for Life, Pretty Muddy and the Shine Night Walk each year. Set up for Race for Life and Pretty Muddy can include putting up marquees and flags to setting up medal tables and water stations. During the event, Hugh can be found helping out wherever’s needed, but will often be on the finish line handing out water and medals, and high-fiving people as they cross the line. He’s also there to do de-rig and take everything apart again afterwards.  

For Hugh, our Shine Night Walk events are particularly special occasions, as he will usually spend the afternoon beforehand helping with set up, before taking part in the event itself with his family.  

Sharing what he enjoys most about being part of our amazing volunteer team, Hugh says: “I get a genuine buzz from helping the team set up a good event that goes well. Volunteering is good for your soul. The first time you see a person cross the finish line and ring the bell before they burst into tears will stay with you for a long time.”
