Thank you for getting our shops back up and running

Shop workers in masks

It’s been almost two months since restrictions were eased for non-essential shops and we’re delighted to reveal that 95% of our shops are now open again. We've seen incredible donations and our sales have been very encouraging.

Things look slightly different nowadays, but with help from you - our wonderful volunteers - we’re able to get safely back to business.

Whether or not you have been able to come back to us yet, your support has made it possible and we want to say a huge thank you. Covid-19 may have slowed us down but we will never stop.

Together we will still beat cancer.

Thank you for helping shape our plans

Thank you to the 900 of you who took our reopening survey. Your input gave us insights into what we could do to support your return and helped us shape our reopening plans.

You told us how much you love your volunteering roles and were missing your team and meeting others. We missed you too!

You also had a few questions about coming back. The main themes were the lack of space, processing donations, not being able to volunteer due to shielding or caring for others or being in the over-70 category. To help address these points, we’ve made a few changes.

Volunteering during the ‘new normal’

We know that some of you will still be unsure about coming back to us just yet. If you’re keen to return, but unsure how it will work, why not book a shop visit ahead of restarting? Just call your shop manager to arrange a good time and pop in to meet the team for a chat and a look around. We hope you’ll be reassured by the things we’ve done to keep our volunteers and customers safe.

Volunteers Paola, Andrew and Elsie have all come back to us recently. Paola volunteers at our Glasgow shop and told us how pleased she was to come back:

‘‘I couldn’t wait to return to my shop volunteer role as I really missed it.”

Read more from Paola (and other valued volunteers) about their experience of returning to their roles.

Other ways to get involved

However you’ve supported us during this time, whether that’s back volunteering in your shop, browsing our online store, or signing up a friend to volunteer with us, we couldn’t be more grateful.

There are lots of ways to volunteer with Cancer Research UK, so if you'd like to try something else, get in touch with us in the volunteering team to let us know. Whatever you decide, it’s completely your choice.

We’re currently facing the greatest challenge in our recent history. Covid-19 is threatening to severely impact our cancer research and make our ambition of improving cancer survival to 3 in 4 by 2034 more difficult.

But we won’t stop working towards making progress for people affected by cancer. Together, with your help, we will still beat cancer.
