Treatment for eye cancer

There are things you can do to help you feel more in control of your health when preparing for treatment. This is called prehabilitation or prehab.

The main treatments for eye cancer are surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. But you may have other treatments that your eye specialist will discuss with you.

Surgery is a common treatment for eye cancer and is very specialised. Your surgery depends on the type of eye cancer you have.

Radiotherapy uses high energy waves similar to x-rays to kill eye cancer cells. You may have internal radiotherapy (brachytherapy) or external radiotherapy.

Chemotherapy uses anti cancer (cytotoxic) drugs to destroy cancer cells. The drugs circulate throughout the body in the bloodstream.

Targeted cancer drugs work by targeting the differences in cancer cells that help them to grow and survive. Other drugs help the immune system to attack cancer. They are called immunotherapies

After treatment for eye cancer, you have regular check ups at the hospital.
