Adrenal gland tumours

Phaeochromocytoma

Phaeochromocytomas are rare tumours of the adrenal gland. Treatment depends on the tumour size, whether it has spread and your general health.

What are phaeochromocytomas?

Phaeochromocytomas are rare tumours that start in the inner part of the adrenal gland (the medulla). They are a type of neuroendocrine tumour.

Diagnosing phaeochromocytomas

There are different tests to diagnose phaeochromocytomas. These include blood and urine tests, CT, MRI and PET scans, and a type of scan called an MIBG scan.

Treatment for phaeochromocytomas

The main treatment for phaeochromocytoma is surgery. For phaeochromocytoma that has spread, treatments include internal radiotherapy, external radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
