Laurel's story
After suffering with a sore throat and severe symptoms like being unable to eat, an endoscopy showed Laurel she had a tumour blocking her oesophagus. A biopsy confirmed the tumour was cancerous.
Surgery was deemed too dangerous, so Laurel had courses of chemotherapy and radiotherapy at the same time. At the time of her diagnosis, her youngest child was just 13. “It was very hard for them. By far my biggest challenge was having to tell them I had cancer”. Laurel was finally given the all clear and now works as a specialist support worker for children with special needs.
“I’m a different woman since I had cancer. I’m a million times more positive. I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for research and the medical care I received.”
